
Caine Youngman is a human rights activist from Botswana.
As a leader of the LGBT movement in Botswana and Africa, Uncle Caine as he if often referred has over 19 years of strategic advocacy experience at the national, regional and international level.
He has served as interim co-CEO and Head of Policy & Legal Advocacy Manager at The Lesbians, Gays and Bisexuals of Botswana (LEGABIBO). He led the 11-year legal battle for the Botswana government to recognize LEGABIBO as a legal entity, coordinated its role in the historic 2019 ruling decriminalising same-sex relations in Botswana, and ensured the voice of the LGBT community was heard during Botswana’s constitutional review in 2022.
From 2021 to 2024 Caine served as a trustee of The Other Foundation, an African trust dedicated to advancing human rights in Southern Africa. As a founding board treasurer, Caine served two terms on the board of Pan-Africa ILGA (PAI), the African wing of the International Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans and Intersex Association (ILGA). He mentors LGBT activists and organisations across the African continent and served as a volunteer advocacy advisor for The Other Foundation’s strategic group of anchor organisations prior to being recruited as a trustee. In Botswana, he was a member of various national policy steering committees, including on health and legal reform. With over 15 years experience in project management, Caine is accredited with Project Management Institute (PMI). He runs a consultancy that focuses on among many other things project management, organisational development, governance management, strategy development, strategic litigation mentoring.
He is married and currently lives in Brussels, Belgium. In Brussels Caine volunteers his services with Rainbow Corporate and Pride (Rainbow House) and is also a member of Brussels Gay Sports (BGS).
